Shiplap | Design Trends in 2019

Adding rustic charm to any space, the shiplap design trend has been sweeping the nation.

In case you’re just getting in on this…. We’re here to help.

Let’s cover the basics.

What is shiplap?

Shiplap is created when wood boards are stacked horizontally on top of each other and held together with notches in the board called rabbets. The rabbets create subtle horizontal reveals between each board.

Where did shiplap come from?

The origination of the word shiplap, as one might guess, is from its use on ships. The unique design of the boards allowed the boards to fit together very tightly, thus, keeping water out. This design, which also proved to be wind resistant, was later used on the exterior of homes as sheathing.

Where should I use shiplap?

Most commonly seen in correlation with the farmhouse chic style trend, shiplap can complement any existing style by adding warmth and texture.  It can be used on walls, or ceilings to add a subtle accent in any space. It’s a great alternative for covering an outdated popcorn ceiling!
